What to Check in a Concrete Patio Bid

Concrete PSI

Minimum 3,000 PSI for residential patios in freeze-thaw climates. 3,500 PSI is better. Air-entrained concrete required in cold climates — prevents spalling. A bid that says just "concrete" without specifying PSI is incomplete.

Thickness

4 inches minimum for a residential patio with no vehicle traffic. 6 inches for areas where cars may access. Thinner pours crack faster and are harder to repair.

Base preparation

Compacted gravel base (4–6 inches) is required for proper drainage and frost protection. A patio poured on uncompacted or unprepared soil will settle and crack.

Drainage slope

Minimum 1/8 inch per foot slope away from the house. No mention of drainage in a bid is a red flag — standing water erodes concrete and causes ice damage.

Control joints

Saw-cut or tooled control joints every 8–12 feet prevent random cracking. Missing control joints don't prevent cracking — they just make it unpredictable.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a concrete patio cost?+
A standard poured concrete patio costs $6–$12/sqft installed for a basic broom finish. Stamped concrete (patterns, colors) runs $12–$25/sqft. Exposed aggregate runs $8–$16/sqft. On a 300 sqft patio, that is $1,800–$3,600 for basic concrete and $3,600–$7,500 for stamped.
Are pavers or concrete cheaper for a patio?+
Concrete is cheaper upfront — $6–$12/sqft vs. $15–$45/sqft for pavers. However, pavers are easier to repair (individual units can be replaced), often look better, and don't crack the same way concrete does. Over a 20-year period, pavers may cost less when accounting for crack repair and resurfacing of concrete.
